What is Global Awareness?

"Global awareness involves a recognition and appreciation of the size, complexity, and diversity of the earth conceived as a single entity. It is literally a worldview-and is at the opposite pole of the view from horseradish. It enables us to perceive the vastness of the world, its dynamic complexity, and the diversity of its peoples and cultures. Awareness, much like mindfulness, is knowing that we don’t know, that there is a realm of knowing that exists outside our direct experience which is often identified with intuition. A Tao proverb states, 'To be free of the disease, one must be sick of the disease.' That is, one must be aware of the disease at the deepest level, irrespective of what one knows about it."
Global awareness has many layers. It not only means being aware in a literal sense but it also infers an understanding of choices. As humans we should be globally aware of how our choices effect everyone living in the world. This is why recycling is often used as a great example for global awareness. It not only focuses on our own decision to recycle but also how recycling effects, the plant, our community and even local habitats.

Why Global Awareness?
As teachers, we need to instill a sense of global awareness in children. Too often children are only exposed to their own backyards. The only experience they have with different people of different backgrounds and cultures is during special occasions or holidays. It is our job to be more than multicultural. We need to have our students think critically about the world around us so they can being to understand the concept that is global awareness.
When children grow are taught in this way they will likely keep this mindset as they grow. If we can ignite a fire for this kind of thinking young, it could lead to many great things in the future. Creating globally aware citizens is not only benefit to the individual but it is also a benefit to society and the world at large.

Relating to Each OtherThe video to the left was one that I think describes global awareness in it's most basic form; understanding each other and accepting each other. I hope you watch a little of the video and listen to the lyrics. "We are one. We're all just people". To me it is important for students to understand that we may come from different cultures and environments but we are all human and therefore have very basic similarities that we can appreciate and relate to. We all have to live on this earth and we should be aware of each other and how we treat the wonderful planet we live on.
